The following tutorial will help guide you in getting started using Garritan products on GarageBand 4. I will assume that all installation processes have been completed. Begin by launching a new GarageBand file. This will most likely give you one Software Track, the Grand Piano. Select the track and press the "i" to view the instrument window. Now click the Details triangle so that you can see the instrument settings...

You are now ready to load up your first instrument. At the top of the details window is a pulldown list for the Instrument Generator. Click on the left pulldown and scroll until you find Kontakt2 Player...

Now click on the little "edit" pencil next to the second pulldown menu. This will bring up the Native Instruments Kontakt 2 Player engine.

Using the little triangle next to the Instruments button, navigate through the hierarchal menu and choose the instrument you wish to be assigned to your track. In this example, we will choose Alto Flute Player 1. You can assign another instrument, but let's keep things simple for now. You can test the instrument you have chosen by clicking on the keys at the bottom of the window. When you are satisfied with your choice, close the window and the instrument has been properly loaded. The instrument will play now, however, you will want to create a custom instrument file so that the next time you wish to have a Garritan flute, it will be far simpler.

To create a custom instrument setting, choose a flute icon by clicking on the current Grand Piano icon in the Details window.

Replace the current Grand Piano icon with a flute icon. Now click the Save Instrument button at the bottom of the Details window and save it as "GPO Alto Flute" or some other name.
